Whitey on the Moon נכתב לאחר שיגור אפולו 11 ב-1969. בשנה בה ניל ארמסטרונג עשה את הצעד הראשון על הירח, גיל סקוט-הרון עשה את צעדו הראשון על הבמה. הוא היה בראשית דרכו כמוזיקאי.
השפעותיו מתנועות אפרו-אמריקאיות בולטות לאורך כל אלבום הבכורה של סקוט-הרון (1970): "אני לא יכול לשלם את החשבון לרופא, אבל אדם לבן על הירח" כתב.
למעשה, אחותו של סקוט-הרון ננשכה על-ידי חולדה בו בזמן שבו ניל ארמסטרונג נחת על הירח. הוא ממשיך לתאר את החוב הרפואי שנוצר עקב הטיפול בה, וכן את עלות המחיה היקרה, היעדר המשאבים, הקושי לשרוד, והיעדר התייחסות ממשלתית, כל זאת בעוד האדם הלבן על הירח.
